Paris Beauvais Airport, with official airport code of BVA, is located to the north of Beauvais in the community of Tillé. It is Paris’ third airport, after Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly. The airport serves mainly budget airlines, and is referred to as the ‘low cost airport’ of Paris. There are no transatlantic or intercontinental flights handled at Beauvais Airport.
Beauvais Airport carries over two million passengers each year on budget airlines such as Blue Air, Ryanair and Wizz Air. The continuous growth of this airport has been mainly due to the increase in services from Ryanair. Recently they have introduced new routes from Alicante, Marseille, Pisa, Bremen and Valencia. The budget airlines favour the smaller and less familiar airports for their arrivals and departures. Beauvais Airport is one of these smaller airports. There are over 20 scheduled flights each day, and for budget travellers, it is an alternative to the larger Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly Airports.
Even though it is a smaller airport, it is equipped with everything an airport needs. There are car hire facilities, shuttle bus services and a taxi rank. The airport staff are friendly and there is a restaurant and bar, and a shopping area. There is adequate parking areas situated within walking distance of the airport, including overnight parking. Beauvais Airport is equipped for disabled passengers and has baby changing facilities. There are four gates at the airport.
It can take an hour to an hour and a half to reach Beauvais Airport from Paris. This may sound long, but is can take even longer to get to Charles de Gaulle or Paris Orly Airport due to congested traffic conditions.
Currently, Beauvais Airport is able to handle medium-sized passenger jets only in good visibility conditions. The main runway, 13-31, does not have an ILS to CAT III standard, which means that landing can be difficult in adverse weather conditions. It is especially difficult when there is fog over the airport. Improvements to the airport’s landing equipment will be made from the 3rd to 9th of June 2009. New ILS CAT III equipment will be installed and the airport will be closed during this time. This equipment should help avoid delays due to bad weather conditions.
Beauvais Airport was originally built in the 1930’s. During the Second World War it was used by the German army. They also made improvements to the airport. Commercial use began at Beauvais Airport from 1956 onwards. In 2005, the airport was again improved and re-developed. During this time, it had three gates operating out of a marquee tent, until the permanent structure was completed.
In October 2008, Ryanair acquired three new aircraft and one of their new routes, starting from the end of March 2009, will be from Alghero to Paris Beauvais Tillé Airport. From 19 February 2009, Wizz Air, one of the budget airlines operating at Beauvais Airport, began flights from Prague. Beauvais Airport will begin to receive flights from Prague on the 25th of July.
Paris Beauvais Airport is closed at night from 11:30 for the benefit of local residents. After this time, arriving flights can be diverted to Charles de Gaulle Airport, Lille Lesquin International, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport or Brussels South Charleroi Airport.
